Creative Literacy | Cultural Literacy

The performance arts don’t just develop a child’s creativity—the core competencies they learn spill over into academic achievement.  Taking place at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, the Laurel Packinghouse, and the Art Commons, the School Day Festival is a great way for students to be inspired, experience a real theatre show, engage in activities, and try a workshop.

Our School Day Festival features high calibre performances by visiting professional artists.  Performances will all take place in the Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Wednesday, June 3rd will be our Primary Student Day (Kindergarten – Grade 3). Thursday, June 4th will be our Intermediate School Day (Grade 4 – 6). On June 4th, add-on workshops presented by our visiting artists will be engaging and interactive so that students can try the skills themselves.  These will happen at the Laurel Packinghouse. All show tickets provide access to our Activity Zone, which will be a tented area in the grassy area out front of the RCA (known as the Art Commons). See a show, eat your lunch, and do some hands-on activities!

Transportation Information

Travelling By School Bus

Where to come?

To the Bus Drop Off and Pickup Area at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, on Cawston Avenue (see map). Our bus team will welcome you there and take you to the Teacher Information Kiosk.

Please make sure you schedule your bus to arrive at the RCA at least 30 minutes before show time.

How to leave?

You will arrange to have your bus pick-up at the same spot you were dropped off, at staggered times from other classes. Please be prompt about loading in, as our street space is limited and we will need time for buses to pick-up and depart.

Travelling By Car

Where to park?

  • Free parking is available along Coronation Street, and St. Paul Street. Please note, these parking spots are only for 2 hour windows.
  • Paid parking in the covered Library Parking Lot on Ellis Street. You can walk through the Art Walk that connects the Library and the Rotary Centre for the Arts. This is a five-minute walk.
  • Note: We will have a special area (in front of the Rotary Centre for the Arts, designated for parents or any special needs drop off and pick up.)

Travelling By Public Transit

Bus to the Queensway Bus Loop, then walk along Ellis Street, through the Art Walk, and directly to the Rotary Centre for the Arts. This walk will take about 15 minutes at a kids pace, so give yourself extra time to avoid missing your show. If you arrive early, hang out in the Activity Zone.

As transit takes longer than planned, please allow yourself extra time to get to Rotary Centre for the Arts. We recommend arriving on-site a minimum of 30 minutes before show time.
